As the saying goes, out of adversity comes opportunity. For one newcomer on the block, Ibiza’s shifting scene has been the grounds for something very special to emerge. A longstanding dream, 528 is Bartolo Escandell’s 50-year-plus vision of a dinner and show concept that bases itself entirely on mother nature. With industry legend Andy McKay, of Pikes and Manumission, in tow to drive the experience, high-caliber entertainers, chefs and a spectacular open-air setting come together for an evening unlike anywhere on the island. We were all too happy to accept an invite to dinner last weekend.
Set in the sprawling planes of Benimussa, upon arrival we felt worlds away from bustling nearby San Antonio. We were as rural as it gets with olive, fig and carob trees circling the restaurant. The brand name is inspired by the magical energies of the island, particularly this west-side spot where the 528hz frequency is said to permeate the grounds – an air of serenity is undeniable. Inside, the restaurant does very little to disrupt the natural flow of the countryside. With rustic chic flair, stylish tables and chairs sit within the unadulterated grounds.
While the stage commands presence at the front, really, it’s the panoramic, 360-degree view of the horizon that stuns the most. Entry time is 7:55pm – five to eight – which is when the sun was just beginning to set, casting a beautiful silhouette of the hills all around us. Oysters, bright-red Ibiza prawns and champagne were offered to whet our appetites alongside a spread of canapes and cheese nibbles presented on hunks on wood.
The attention to detail with every bite that was presented was second to none. With renowned chef Gonzalo Aragüez, of Destino and Lío, and sous-chef Massimiliano Bartelloni behind the food, the intricacy of the starters were clear displays of art. The gastronomical feast had only just started. As the night sky made its appearance, the show kicked off with a moving performance by a singer. Small plates of delectable lobster ravioli, paella and squid began filtering through. 528’s dedication to Ibiza’s home-grown produce and locally caught seafood was obvious with every ingredient melt-in-the-mouth.
The huge blanket of stars above us was incredible as the show ramped up its performances. Fire dancers snaked in between tables and surrealist acrobats swung from the stage, each performer conveying Ibiza’s mythical stories to the sound of rolling drums and imaginative percussionists. Feeling as if we were in the wilderness, with molecular gastronomy, shapeshifting dancers, and swirling music the whole experience felt unbelievably ethereal. A power band set a blazing finish as we savoured hand-finished macaroons and fragrant cocktails.
We left 528 completely intoxicated by the sounds, sights, and tastes of it all. With award-winning staff behind every element of the theatrical dinner, this is one experience to be savoured. Whether it was the 528hz at work, the evening left a lingering feeling of serenity well after our time there. This is one venue that has to be seen to be believed.
