If your idea of paradise involves seclusion, nature and tranquillity, then a visit to Playa Cala Mastella could be as close as you can get to experiencing paradise.
Way off the beaten track and a world away from the bright lights and pulsing beats of the party hotspots of Ibiza Town and San Antonio, the serene beach at Cala Mastella offers visitors the chance to relax and bask in the stunning, secluded natural bay.
As you would expect from a beach off the tourist trail, the beach is simply that: a beach. Without the amenities and facilities enjoyed by the larger resort beaches, such as toilets and showers, there is an unadulterated connection here between the sea and the sand. Thrill seekers may find the leisurely pace of life too much to bear, this being one of the few beaches in Ibiza without the offer of water sports equipment for hire.
The beach can only be reached via a single road, roughly 4 kilometres from the village of Sant Carles. Visitors benefit from a small car park situated behind the beautiful pines that act as a curtain to real life, leaving everything but the beach behind you. The sand, dark in colour and slightly pebbly, is inviting but can become stony in places, making appropriate footwear a must for those wishing to paddle on the shoreline.
Playa Cala Mastella does benefit from one small beachside kiosk, selling snacks, refreshments and essentials to visitors. The local owner is extremely friendly and always has the time to recall the island’s history, as well as reveal secluded spots usually reserved for natives. It is this charm that makes Cala Mastella a real island gem and reminds us of why the island’s guests keep coming back year after year.
