An explosive performance from one man who many might be not be familiar with by DJ-name turned Ushuaïa Ibiza from a poolside party to an arena-style affair on Tuesday 23rd. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s Tomorrowland concept sees an epic takeover of the ultra-luxe open-air grounds every week, bringing together renowned production, captivating visuals and a custom-built stage by the festival brand themselves. This week’s show saw a particularly exciting guest turn up to the illustrious decks, NBA’s most dominant player in history, Shaquille O’Neal – aka DJ Diesel. Clad in a white vest and shorts, his almighty 7’1” frame, little did we know, would be the tone to his entire performance.
DJ Diesel’s appearance closely followed a performance at Tomorrowland festival in Belgium on the 19th, playing the mainstage to a field of thousands of revellers. Celebrity DJ’s are often yawned at, yet for this track-spinner, music has been a part of his DNA since 1986. It may come as a surprise to know that Diesel released a self-titled rap album in 1993 that went from being in the top 100 to a platinum-seller. These days, playing giant stadiums to smaller, boutique venues has been the calling card since a retirement from sports in 2011. And, as of five years, since discovering the Tomorrowland boys, the sounds that Diesel has come to champion and the styles of crowds witnessed has played a pivotal role in what this artist now brings to the dancefloor.
Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike’s choice to bring him to the show comes with the following sentiments: “having followed Shaq and been inspired by him throughout his career, it was a great pleasure to have him perform for us as DJ Diesel at Ushuaïa last night and at Tomorrowland last weekend as he’s such an icon.”
As we arrived just in time to catch this megastar in the flesh, what was of surprise to find was a set a heavy concoction of dubstep, trap, hip-hop and vocal EDM. His energising performance brought an MC companion in tow who added extra life to the party – although Shaq’s presence was enough in itself. Whatever he did, his crowd emulated – a wave of the hand, a screech for energy, the following were pure putty in his hands. A jaw-dropping tapestry of rapid-hitting basslines and rhythms that had every body moshing, headbanging and throwing their hands in the air can only be described as the ultimate power hour performance.
With adrenaline fast pumping as every neatly mixed banger rocked the crowd to levels unprecedented, Diesel’s casual demeaner played a stark contrast. Having once helped his teams win Olympic gold in basketball, it was evident this same winning attitude was being channelled – leaving not a second wasted in throwing a hell of a fiesta. It’s always amazing to see a legend in the flesh, yet to see a legend reborn again and living their best second life is another sight in itself. As further performances by the following artists on the roster took to the stage, we couldn’t help but remember the formidable show Diesel put together.
The power of an athlete rolled into the music-sphere is a force to be reckoned with. And, he’s not stopping anytime soon. Going on to complete another weekend at Tomorrowland festival, you can be sure this superstar will be at a venue near you. In the meantime, Tuesdays at Ushuaïa Ibiza have never been more exciting. In the throes of their 15th anniversary, keep your eyes peeled for more ground-breaking acts!
