Red alert! With temperatures sweltering on the White Isle, seeking shelter from the August heat on one of Ibiza’s many beautiful beaches seems like the logical choice.
Naturally, most of the other island visitors seem to have the same idea!
Lured by crystal clear waters and soft, powdery sands, finding a comfortable spot to sun yourself on Ibiza’s most famous beaches in August and September seems almost impossible.
If you are not a fan of lying towel-to-towel with your fellow beachgoers, here, we share a selection of less busy seaside spots to escape the crowds…
The secret coves of Las Salinas
Las Salinas is arguably one of Ibiza’s most famous and glamorous beaches. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the beautiful stretch of sand is positively overflowing with people in high season. If you still want to experience a beach day on Las Salinas, don’t despair! Enter the beach through the Jockey Club beach restaurant’s walkway and, when you reach the seafront, turn left. Walk past the Sa Trinxa beach bar and follow along the coast for around 15 – 20 minutes. You will find many small coves with fascinating rock formations and even artistic carvings where you can lay your towel.
The far end of Es Cavallet
With white sands and stunning views on Ibiza Town and Dalt Vila, Es Cavallet beach is no less popular than its neighbouring stretch of sand Las Salinas. However, with the majority of beach restaurants and beach clubs situated at the top of this long, wide beach, the further you are willing to make your way down, the less crowded it becomes. Pass the elegant El Chiringuito on your right and enjoy a walk down the soft sands until you find your perfect spot.
The rugged red coastline between Santa Eulalia and Es Canar
If you are a morning person, there is a wonderful coastal path that runs from the outskirts of Santa Eulalia all the way up to Es Canar that offers many picturesque little bays and secret swimming spots to enjoy! Jumping in on the route behind Babylon Beach, simply head North and discover the beauty of Ibiza’s coastline. It is advisable to set off early before the heat becomes too intense, as well as protecting yourself with plenty of sunscreen and a hat. Along the route, you will pass the pretty expanse of Playa Niu Blau, the family-friendly Cala Pada beach and wide expanse of S’Argamassa. There are many beach bars and seaside restaurants along the way, too, to tempt you with refreshments.
Ibiza’s wild North: Cala Boix
With its mountainous landscape and tranquil vibe, a visit to the North is a must for Ibiza lovers who want to discover a different side to the island. Cala Boix is one of the beaches that is the highest up along the White Isle’s East coast, and with just one small guesthouse and restaurant on its shores doesn’t draw the crowds as much as the neighbouring beaches of Aguas Blancas and Es Figueral. With striking dark sands and crystal waters, it is a fantastic option for a swim in the Balearic Sea. The far left of the beach (when facing the sea) offers the most secluded corner hidden behind some boulders.
The hidden gems of Portinatx
Also far up in the North awaits the small resort of Portinatx, the island’s northernmost bay with two stretches of sand. The larger Portinatx beach tends to be busier due to the surrounding hotels and ease of access. However, the small cove at the far end of the urbanisation is well worth a visit thanks to the picturesque fishing huts and the hip Los Enamorados boutique hotel with its stylish restaurant and bar. Those in the know take a gentle hike across the opposing rock outcrop to sun themselves on the tiny, pebbly coves just out of the small harbour. We recommend you hire a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) for an hour or two to explore the surrounding caves and striking rock formations.
A secret corner in Port de San Miguel
Around a 20 minute drive North from the charming village of Santa Gertrudis awaits the family-friendly beach of Port de San Miguel. With a variety of bars and restaurants, it does get busy in the summer – but to the left of the main beach you will find a picturesque hidden bay with beautiful clear waters, rugged rock formations, fishing huts, forested cliffs and even a cave perfect to explore during a snorkelling session. Simply follow along the small path that winds around the forested cliff to the left of the main beach. The cove itself has a mix of sand and pebbles so may not be the most comfortable to lay down – in comparison to others – but the secluded feel and paradisiacal views more than make up for it!
