Just a few kilometres from Sant Vincent Cove lies Es Culleram Punic Sanctuary. It is an impressively large cave, with ceilings reaching one hundred and fifty metres high. Located within the Can Quintals property, Es Culleram Punic Sanctuary is crucial to the archaeological history of Ibiza.

The cave was discovered in 1907, which was the same year that the Ebutisan Archaeological Society completed an excavation. It was during this excavation that the society uncovered many terracotta figures and other materials. In total they found 600 whole terracotta statues and over a thousand heads, they also discovered a bone or ivory lion figure. One of the most intriguing objects discovered in the area was a plaque featuring double Punic inscriptions. It was found in 1917 and today is on display in the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante. Es Culleram Punic Sanctuary was a site used for many archaeological explorations until 1981. The cave is now part of Ibiza’s Insular Council.

It is thought that the cave was inhabited during the Bronze Age, and from the 5^th century it was used as a sanctuary. In later periods, the cave underwent some artificial modifications, including the preservation of an artificial room and a Punic tank.

Es Culleram Punic Sanctuary sat within a large natural hole, with a water stream that divided the rooms. Most notably were two large rooms, divided by a curtain of stalactites. It is thought that the deeper rooms in the cave were used as bothros, or sacred deposits, and the remains of sacrificial offerings were left here. Many animal remains which were used as sacrifices have been found in the cave, and is thought to have been dedicated to the goddess Tanit.

During the time of the cult sacrifices in Es Cullaram, the Sa Cala canal was home to many local residents. It is expected that these inhabitants were affected by the cult, who eventually abandoned the cave when one of the large rooms collapsed.

The cave is open to visitors from April to October, Tuesdays to Sunday between 10am and 2pm.
