12Nestled within the beautiful rocky cliffs between San Antonio and San Agnes lies the cave of Ses Fontanelles. It’s also known as Cova del Vi, or the Wine Cave, because the area was previously used for wine storage. The stone walls were once ideal for storing wine as they kept it at the correct temperature and prevented the heat from causing the wine to acidify.
This small rock shelter sits 50m above sea level along the coastline and is well worth a visit on a trip to the island. Within the cave of Ses Fontanelles you will find beautiful, prehistoric cave paintings. These intriguing paintings were discovered by French archaeologist Henri Breuli back in 1917. They were believed to be from the Bronze Age, around 1000 BC. More recent studies have revealed they actually date back to the Punic Era.
The prehistoric paintings are heavily protected and preserved, with access to the cave being prevented by fences. However, it is still worth making the journey to Ses Fontanelles as synthetic resin replicas of the paintings have been placed around the outside. You can explore the ancient works of art on the resins and see the originals from a distance within the cave.012
Ses Fontanelles also offers incredible views across Cala Salada, San Antonio and the western coast. You can look out the glistening blue seas and take in the stunning rocky coastline over Ibiza.
The cave can be reached on foot from Cala Salada, with the walk taking about an hour. Access can be difficult, but the stroll is well worth it. You can also visit Ses Fontanelles by car, but the road is rocky and better suited to 4x4s. Head along the road to Cala Salada, and then head right up the dirt road before the beach. You will pass by two houses and reach a fork in the road. Choose the right side and then left at the next fork. If driving, you can park up near the cliffs and walk the rest of the way.
