Top tunes from Fatboy Slim’s surprise set at Ibiza Rocks

Confetti, sparks and air horns galore.

When a teaser in the form of a smiley-faced flyer was published from Ibiza Rocks, there was no second-guessing who it was about. Dance music legend, Fatboy Slim would be performing poolside for a surprise pop-up event. A buzz of excitement was sparked in San Antonio in anticipation for this special event, in some ways for the first time this summer.

Like many venues across the island, Ibiza Rocks had adapted their poolside interior for social distancing rules. Extra beds had been installed, and table service perfected to ensure that customers stay safely seated.

After seeing this in action, it goes to show that the White Isle is capable of throwing compliant parties. It’s also fair to say that Ibiza Rocks truly deserves the high certification they recently received from the Spanish Tourism industry for health risk prevention.

On the day, Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) started the day by playing host, posing for selfies while wearing his custom smiley-faced mask. When he took to the stage, the medley of music was matched with a barrage of confetti, sparks and air-horn hooting – as is customary for a Fatboy Slim set.

Clearly happy with being back behind the decks, Cook announced: “It’s the first time I’ve DJ’d outside my living room for over six months, it’s made me so happy today to see people having fun”. As a further surprise, he brought his son, Woody and daughter, Nelly (Fat Girl Slim) onstage. Seeing them dance about as a family trio was a heartwarming moment.

Watching Fatboy Slim mixing and blending his way through four hours of pumping house, while intercutting his own classics, was an exhilarating experience. Here are some of our favourites from the surprise show.

Purple Disco Machine – Move or Not

This funk-filled disco number got the party started early in the afternoon at Ibiza Rocks. That unmistakable sample from Rappers Delight had heads bobbing to the beat.

John Summit – Deep End

While there won’t be many contenders for song of the summer this year, this Defected-signed house offering has been shining through over the past few months. Its addictive bassline and hypnotic vocal certainly went down a treat in the afternoon sunshine.

Andrea Giudice & Larry Cadge – Baby (Mark Knight Rework)

During the show, Fatboy Slim tended to keep the music nice and funky, matching the vibe of the party. The DJ couldn’t resist slipping in some fist-pumping moments, utilising this Mark Knight tech-house tool to work the crowd.

Superskank – Good Time (Olivier Giacomotto Remix)

“Everybody’s going to the party to have a real good time” – vocals that couldn’t be more appropriate for this surprise party in particular. We think for many Ibiza Rocks attendees, this was the first time they’d had a real good time in 2020.

Erick Morillo – Cartagena

When Fatboy Slim’s son and daughter took to the stage, he dropped this flute-filled anthem for them to dance and prance about to. Those bongo drum rhythms kept the party’s energy in full swing.

Sonny Fodera & Dom Dolla – Moving Blind

Fatboy Slim son, Woody took over the decks for a few tunes. One of the bangers they selected was this heater from Ibiza Rocks residency alumni Sonny Fodera, a recent release from the Australian producer.

Stardust – Music Sounds Better With You

It wouldn’t be a true Fatboy Slim set without a dance music classic. As the vocal “Love might bring us back together” rang around the venue, it was clear that the love of music (and a legendary DJ) had brought everyone out of their post-lockdown slump, rejoining with good friends to enjoy a summer’s day at Ibiza Rocks.
