It’s easy to get swept up in Ibiza’s entertainment and endless roster of activities. Things are a little different this year, the island is taking its precautions and its typically heady nightlife is tentative. I took some time to do something outside of my usual routine of events this time of year. And something the rest of us are likely to overlook on an action-packed trip to the White Isle. Ruth, manager of the spa at Hotel MiM Es Vive invited me down for a day of R&R and a look around their wellness centre.
And it has to be said, this adults-only hotel is something of a hidden gem. A stone’s throw from Figueretas beach and a short walk to Ibiza Town it’s got all of the popular hotspots at its doorstep. Still it’s easily overlooked by its residential location and towering fencing that affords little view inside. Characterised by an art-deco theme, the hotel’s bold aesthetic once through its gates is something to be seen. Designed in collaboration with interior designer Sean Cochran, the space offers many stylish touches from marble surfaces to opulent glass chandeliers.
Towards the back, the spa is unlike anywhere else on the island. It’s a private wooden terrace fully lined with beautiful dark paneling. Cozy yet sophisticated, with gaps through the decking allowing for sun to filter through. I was instantly caught by the grey marble rainfall shower that sits next to the central jacuzzi. Although there wasn’t much time to take in the saunas surrounding it, I was soon greeted by the wonderful Natalie who took me to one of two treatment rooms. They come dimly lit and mirror-paneled, nouveau like the rest of the hotel. I was talked through what I’d be having. The centre’s back, neck and shoulder massage and an exclusive SCENS facial which is a high-end organic and vegan product line.
I’ll admit, I was a little delicate from the previous night. So a tension busting massage with a pressure adjustment just the way I like it was very welcome. By the time we’d reached the facemasks, I’d fast fallen asleep. Finished off with a round in the steam room and Finnish sauna, it’s fair to say I felt a million miles from the sound systems and summer crowds. If anything, most definitely like a new person.
What’s great about the hotel’s spa is how affordable it is. While there’s several super-luxe destinations nearby, massages here range from €50 to €110 and facials €60 to €110. You won’t spend any more than €140 for two hours of their top treatment package. So while a spa-day may be typically reserved for the quiet holiday makers, at Es Vive you can do something different for less than the cost of a night out. Not only for rainy days, with the beach nearby it’s the perfect siesta pitstop for when it gets scorching. For those after a boutique experience, a trip to Es Vive makes for an invigorating break from the island’s hedonism.
