Back for its 5th summer season on the White Island, Destino Pacha Resort’s Grand Opening of 2017 did everything right once again last Friday evening. A notably high-volume of beautifully trimmed VIP’s were in attendance as always, and they were treated to a musical master class from two of the most eclectic artists in the industry today.
With the old town of Dalt Vila fading away into the haze of the Ibiza sunset as we arrived at Destino, the incredibly talented 28-year old South African DJ, Shimza, had warmed the crowd up to perfection, proved by the huge reception at the end of his set. Right on cue, in a venue he knows inside out, Israeli artist Guy Gerber took the reigns at around 8pm to really kick off the night’s proceedings.
Perfectly placed under the high, wooden-beamed arches of the Destino stage (which it can’t be ignored, likens itself to Ushuaia in many ways – yet in a slightly more elegant and ‘Pacha-like’ way); Guy Gerber opened his set with “RJ” by Radio Slave – a 2008 release that gently brought a groove into the event to a welcome cheer from the crowd.
Things really got going around 9pm as Mr. Gerber took things up a notch with Kink’s 2016 release, Chorus; a ‘dancey’, baseline-heavy track with a wide range of euphoric chords that built towards an epic snare-drop. Guy Gerber’s own night, Rumours, had opened on May 21st, where he plays towards the rear of the Pacha-owned venue. Tonight though, he was in prime position on the main stage; his blend of Balearic house amongst a varied, mystical undertone simply perfect on the night.
While Guy Gerber’s start was gentle, Luciano’s, as always, was full of surprises – although it must be said we’ve almost come to expect the unexpected from the Swiss superstar, whose love affair with Ibiza continues to evolve. Opening with an upbeat and groovy remix of BT Express’s ‘Give Up The Funk’, his progressively Balearic style did all to ensure that nobody was leaving the packed out dance floor in a hurry. There is just something just right about ‘Luciano at Destino.’ A match made in heaven. His set was accompanied by some amazing visuals on the screen behind, notably at one point the fluttering wings of a Dove, symbolising peace and unity at a time where it feels more overly appropriate. The main stage closed around midnight, with the party continuing underground at the resort’s intimate venue, Tox Club Privé.
A celebration of music in a quite spectacular location, Destino Pacha Resort is now in its 5th summer on the island. This ultra-slick, luxury venue has more than established itself as a major player in the electronic music world as well as one of the most beautiful hotels on the island. We can’t wait to return.
